Bobs Business
e-learning for business information security
“Bobs Business” http://www.bobsbusiness.co.uk is a good example of using e-learning in a novel and light hearted way while addressing a dry and boring topic – one of Information Security (ISO/IEC 17799 and ISO/IEC 27001). Does it get any drier?
The benefits of E-learning being used in this way is to allow flexibility and interaction for the learner and tracking and testing for the employer. As such this is a classic example of compliance led e-learning, for which e-learning is well recognised.
The learning genre is cartoon based, with Bob and colleagues dealing with quite complex requirements of password protocols or data backup for example in a light hearted way. Indeed the approach is relentlessly upbeat, animated, text based and with a background audio track which is designed to maintain attention and pace. This e-learning is meant to get simple but very important messages embedded into employees everyday activities, and as such works magnificently. This is fit for purpose e-learning!
These modules are meant for short and snappy e- learning in the workplace, running for just a few minutes, each module seeks to address just one topic, but in a memorable manner. You will not drift off with this e-learning material.
Like those annoying adverts or jingles on the radio, this is e- learning that is designed to make you remember, and in our view will change behaviour……and after all that it is what it sets out to do…..
The quiz at the end of each module is simple but effective and a neat reporting mechanism allows for the learner to review the quiz and their performance.
There is a very well produced user guide and administrators guide, and full marks to Bob and his backers for tackling some difficult topics with e-learning. Topics addressed include mobile working and even advanced fee frauds!
Classic and stylish this is not, simple and effective is what this e-learning is and it makes no bones about that. Melanie Oldham the entrepreneur behind Bob’s Business sees the Marmite in these e-learning modules, learners will love or hate them, but they will not forget the learning message – guaranteed!
If only all e-learning came with such a guarantee!
