The Working Smarter Fieldbook, September 2010 (its third edition) is a work by the Internet Time Alliance, made up of Jay Cross, Jane Hart, Harold Jarche, Charles Jennings and Clark Quinn.
Designed as a book that will never be finished, hence 3 editions each bigger than the previous. This book or indeed un-book contains a wealth of wisdom and insight from the authors and a mass of useful definitions and diagrams. Many other thinkers are also featured in its pages. Un-books are never finished and indeed you are invited to contribute should you wish!
I am not sure that this is a cover to cover read, its more of a dip in and dip out, and is organised as such, with an unusual illustration of the contents along with a more conventional listing.
Very informative indeed and the book opens with a quote from Harold “Hal” Geneen (of ITT fame that took me back to Michael Sampson’s work on ITT – the Sovereign State published in 1973 where new ITT staffers would ask how to pronounce Geneen – with a hard G as in God or a softly as in Jesus such was his hold and reputation in the company!), nevertheless a great quote “In business, words are words; explanations are explanations, promises are promises, but only performance is reality”. Geneen has a number of other great quotes attributed to him including”Leadership cannot really be taught, it can only be learned.” So if you wish to learn how to work smarter this book is well worth a look.
